CV

As the first chair of neurology in the newly established medical department of the Technische Universität München, Albrecht Struppler was director of the Neurological Hospital and Clinic at the Rechts der Isar University Hospital. During his period of service, he accelerated medicine’s connection and awareness of technical developments, thereby creating a modern and internationally recognised clinical and academic institution with a focus on experimental and clinical neurophysiology and functional neurosurgery. Regarding stereotaxis, a field to which he contributed significantly, he was a pioneer of modern medical engineering, with particularly close collaboration among neurology, electrical engineering and information technology. His academic interests focused on, in particular, the somatosensory system and nociceptive pathways. Always a fixture of his work, collaboration among various disciplines and his international contacts continue to influence Albrecht Struppler’s immediate working environment. In 1954, he was the first German intern to go abroad and established professional friendships with academics in other countries, for example in Sweden and the USA. Since his retirement in 1989, he has been active as a renowned personage in the medical field with a small group of collaborators to work on research projects in his field for the German Research Foundation.
