Reiner Gradinger’s attachment to the University hospital Klinikumrechts der Isar and the Technische Universität Munich is profound.It was here that he undertook all the significant steps in his medicalcareer, from his medical studies, doctorate, specialist medical training andhabilitation to his first appointment as a university professor in 1991. In 1993,he moved to the north of Germany, as a professor for orthopedics at theMedical University of Lübeck. However, he soon moved back to his hometown: In 1997, he became the Chair of Orthopedics and Sport Orthopedicsand Trauma Surgery. From 2007 up until the end of 2015 he was the medicaldirector at the University hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich. Thefocus of Reiner Gradinger’s clinical work and research lies in the reconstructionof muscular-skeletal defects caused by wear and abrasion, infections, ortumors. This includes tissue engineering, as well as the development ofendoprosthetic systems, in which bio-medical technology plays an importantrole. Brand new materials were created in the orthopedics laboratories. ProfessorGradinger is known for his outstanding resection of tumors with subsequentreconstructions using individualized implants. In 1992 he performedthe first operation in which a pelvis, hip joint, thigh bone, and knee joint wereall replaced at once. As well as his work at the University hospital Klinikumrechts der Isar, Reiner Gradinger has also been active on a nationwide basis.Amongst other things, he was a member of the board of the German Societyof Surgery from 2002 to 2006, and assumed the office of president in2009/2010.
